Verify Your NYC Agent
Please Be Aware: Scammers pose as realtors and landlords, sometimes as roommates looking for other roommates.
NEVER SEND MONEY TO ANYONE.
If you are working with a real estate agent:
Demand the agent’s license number, and a photograph of their pocket ID card (different from a State ID or Driver License).
By law, they must oblige you. If they fail to present this info to you, it is likely a scam.
Do not fall for any sob stories ( I lost it, forgot it at home, my dog ate it, etc.)
How to verify your NYC real estate agent
If they do provide you with their real estate agent license number, you can check and see if they are actively licensed, and which brokerage they are currently affiliated with.
If you are working with a landlord:
You should try to visit the property in person (always bring someone with you if you can).
If you are putting a deposit down on a place, ALWAYS use a check and if possible, a cashier check (which is insured by the bank and is traceable).
